ISO/IEC 17021-2:2016 has been updated, and the new competence requirements for auditors and other personnel involved in environmental management system (EMS) audits and certification are now officially in force. Certification bodies accredited under ISO 14001 must ensure their assessor teams meet the revised criteria by Q4 2026.
What Has Changed?
The revision to ISO/IEC 17021-2 introduces more granular competence requirements across three categories:
- Generic Knowledge and Skills: Updated to reflect advances in risk-based thinking and the enhanced use of technology in audit processes.
- Sector-Specific Knowledge: Expanded requirements for industry-specific environmental regulations, including waste management, water use, and carbon reporting frameworks.
- Audit Methodology: Greater emphasis on remote audit techniques and sampling strategies in complex organisations.
What Certification Bodies Must Do
Certification bodies must conduct a competence gap analysis for all EMS auditors by July 31, 2026. Any identified gaps must be addressed through training or supervised audits before the Q4 2026 deadline. Evidence of competence must be documented in personnel files and made available during UKICB surveillance assessments.
UKICB Guidance and Support
UKICB has published a detailed transition guidance document available in the Documents section of this website. We will also be hosting a dedicated webinar in July 2026 to walk accredited certification bodies through the practical implications of the changes. Registration details will be published shortly.
